CURRICULUM VITAE
Ioannis Koutroubakis was born on July, 1959 in Chania, Crete, Greece.
He studied medicine and graduated at the University of Athens Medical School in 1984 where he obtained the Medical Bachelor's Degree.
He was trained as a resident physician in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology under the supervision of Prof. O.N. Manousos in University Hospital Heraklion Crete. He obtained a Master's Degree in 1994.
He became a gastroenterologist in University Hospital Heraklion Crete.
From 1994 to 1995 he studied immunogenetics of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in the Free University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, under the supervision of Prof. A.S. Pena, Prof. S. G. M. Meuwissen and Mr. J.B.A. Crusius.
He obtained a PhD Degree at the University of Crete in 1996. In 2004 he was elected as a member of the International Organization for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IOIBD).
His current position is Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Department of Gastroenterology of the University Hospital of Heraklion Crete. He is a member of the Societies: Greek Society of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, and Mediterranean Medical Society.
He is also member of the Editorial Board of the journals BMC Gastroenterology, World Journal of Gastroenterology, The Open Gastroenterology Journal, Inflammation & Allergy - Drug Targets, and BMC Research Notes. Moreover, has served as reviewer of the journals Gastroenterology, Gut, American Journal of Gastroenterology, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Digestive Diseases and Sciences, European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Digestive and Liver Diseases, Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology, Human Immunology, European Journal of Clinical Investigation and Blood Coagulation and Fibrinolysis.
His research interests are on inflammatory bowel disease (genetics, environmental factors, serological markers, thrombosis, fibrosis) and intestinal ischemia. He has published several articles on these topics.
